What’s Happening! Local Events and Happenings to Note in March

As I sit here and finish this blog post, Ally and Natalie are vegging out in the living room and we’re skipping church…because they BOTH woke up with pink eye. Ugh! It’s also snowing outside and we’re under a Winter Storm Warning with 5-9 inches predicted. I’m still embracing winter over here and trying to be excited for the snow, but this month’s spring-y newsletter and plethora of Garrett County and Deep Creek events has me hoping spring weather will actually come sometime soon… 🙂

Local Events and Dates to Note

Women’s Networking Happy Hour
Thursday, March 7th at 5:30pm at Black Bear

My lovely lady friends Terah Crawford and Dawn Beitzel are taking their monthly networking luncheons on the road! Okay, not technically out and about “on the road”, but they’re changing things up by offering networking happy hour events at a new location! At each event, they spotlight a local non-profit and lady in business in Garrett County. Drinks and a selection of appetizers will be available for $12 per person. If you’re a local lovely lady, join these ladies!

Maple Syrup Making Demonstration
Saturday, March 9th at 10am at Sang Run State Park

I’ve had my fair share of maple making and maple festival experiences. My Grandma Smith used to actually take my siblings and I to Meyersdale, PA back in the day (they’re well-known for  their maple festival) and I’ve got some nice memories from those times. So when I saw Sang Run State Park was holding a maple demo event, I knew I had to put it on the calendar!

Sip & Paint Watercolor with Artists and Dreamers
Friday, March 15th from 6pm to 8pm at Black Bear Wine & Words

My friends over at Wine & Words are doing big and fun things! Next up on their agenda is a watercolor painting night WITH cheese and wine! $32 includes all needed watercolor materials, a sampling of the cheese and wine BB has to offer. On the painting agenda: A wine bottle and glass-inspired picture! Purchase tickets here. There’s also a special for couples!

The watercolors above actually belong to my Creative Aide, Hannah. Go check out her work here!

S.T.E.M. Like A Girl
Saturday, March 16th from 1pm to 3pm at Deep Creek Lake State Park Discovery Center

S.T.E.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Ally and Jack both have S.T.E.M. classes each week at school and Ally began participating in the science + technology robotics programs last year, so sharing the event here seemed especially appropriate! I plan on taking Ally to this event where hands-on science exploration pioneered by women will be presented. It’s also a little reminder that our Discovery Center is a nice option for activity throughout the year here in Garrett County.

St. Patrick’s Day Kegs & Eggs
Sunday, March 17th from 10am to 3pm at North Glade Inn

Erica and Justin are at it again! The NGI owners are keeping themselves busy and continuing to invite people into their B&B with yet another off-season event. And this time, they’re doing it in Irish style! They’ll be sharing a full spread of Irish brunch, along with beer, mimosas, and sangria. I also hear that Guinness cupcakes are on the menu! Live music will be provided and tickets are $25 per person.

Our Town Theatre: Open Mic Night
Thursday, March 21st at 7pm at Our Town Theatre

I recently found out that some people aren’t aware that Garrett County has a theatre! Downtown Oakland is home to Our Town Theatre where numerous shows are performed each year. Once a month, they open their doors for open mic night where people can share music, short stories, poetry, dance, skits, etc. Find out more about the theatre here

Deep Creek Boat, RV and PowerSports Expo
Saturday and Sunday, March 30-31 at the Garrett County Fairgrounds

This event is the first of its kind for the show organizers and it’s pretty perfect for Garrett County and Deep Creek! I don’t know a whole lot about this show, but I imagine my little family of five may pay a visit to look at some of the outdoor toys we may never own. 🙂

A Night on Broadway
Saturday, March 30th from 6pm to 10pm at Garrett College Events Center

My friend Mary is director of Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, host of this event, and it sounds like it’ll be an evening for people of all ages. Show tunes will be highlighted and dinner will be catered by the delicious Savage River Lodge. Tickets are $75 per person. Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, GLAF, is a non-profit that promotes cultural and artistic activities in the county.

Scenes and thoughts from deep creek

Well hey now! I thought for sure it had been more than seven months since I blogged last! Wish I could do it more…and plan to as soon as the new JFP website comes out.

I’m not sure I’m starting anything consistent here, just sharing some random thoughts and scenes from Deep Creek on this random Wednesday…

Jessica is amazing and she made us feel so comfortable! Having her capture our wedding was like having my best friend with me for every moment! Jessica's photos are fun, whimsical, and sophisticated!

We are not a stoic couple and did not want posed (or trying-too-hard) photos! Jessica was able to capture our personalities and the elegance of the day! I can't stop looking at our photos!

"Jessica is amazing!"

The best decision I could have made for my wedding was hiring Jessica Fike as a photographer! I was in a wedding prior that she was a photographer for and seeing how organized and easy and strategic she was to work with is what convinced me! She makes you feel so comfortable and helps teach you how to pose and smile and look so natural! She keeps you on schedule throughout your day and captures so much emotion in her photos. She is worth every penny plus more!

" the best decision."
