Family Sessions In My Backyard

Yesterday I blogged about a session that I did four years ago and reminisced a bit about what was going on in my life at that time. Four years ago we were living in Morgantown, WV and anxiously awaiting the official groundbreaking of our new home build. The year before that, we found the land, explored it, and eventually purchased it. But in that time of exploration and consideration, the idea of doing portraits in our backyard never really dawned on me. I’m not even really sure when I realized our backyard would be appropriate for portrait sessions, but man am I glad it eventually came to mind!

Over the past few years, I’ve had engaged couples and growing families visit me at our home for sessions in the backyard. They’ve come from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Eastern Maryland and Virginia. Some have stood in the rain and some have endured humidity and cold winds. Some have come multiple times, some have brought their dogs and some even played on our swing set with my kiddos. I love inviting clients to our home and I’m so thankful that we have a private, photo-worthy backdrop for a backyard. It allows me to create a very special photography experience for all my visiting clients, and I’m excited for all the backyard sessions that will happen this year!

Here’s a look at some of the sessions I did in our backyard last year…

For this family session, the forecast said it wouldn’t rain, and then it did. And it rained HARD. But these guys were absolute troopers and didn’t mind standing under an umbrella while their shoulders and legs got soaked. Because we were in my backyard, we were able to huddle inside, Andrea could re-straighten her hair and Gabriel could cut loose with some of the kiddos’ toys. We ventured back outside and captured exactly what we needed…

It rained so hard we had puddles of water in our woods. Naturally, Gabriel couldn’t resist. 🙂

Next up, the G family! I met these four when Brian started working in Morgantown and they’re so much fun to be around! Especially these two kiddos…what sweethearts!

Annie and Zack have got some spunk! I think they get it from their dad. 🙂

One of my favorite family portraits of all time!

Just being real in the backyard. 🙂

P.S. This session was done at 10 in the morning on a bright and sunny day, which is usually a no-no for most photographers. But because our backyard includes an acre of lush woods, sunny conditions can be overcome!

Lindsay, how many times have we taken pictures together? Three times!? 🙂 I always enjoy my time with this family so much! We first met a couple of years ago when little Miss G was just a tot. Then I reunited with them and their immediate family during a winter getaway at the lake…and it was freezing outside! (I think the temperatures were in the teens!) And last year, they visited me for a backyard session…

When in doubt, encourage some tickles. 🙂

Another all-time favorite picture! What a sweet little girl moment. 🙂

Continued thanks to all my clients who visit me for backyard sessions in Garrett County. I so very much enjoy having you here and appreciate your willingness to come to me!

Scenes and thoughts from deep creek

Well hey now! I thought for sure it had been more than seven months since I blogged last! Wish I could do it more…and plan to as soon as the new JFP website comes out.

I’m not sure I’m starting anything consistent here, just sharing some random thoughts and scenes from Deep Creek on this random Wednesday…

Jessica is amazing and she made us feel so comfortable! Having her capture our wedding was like having my best friend with me for every moment! Jessica's photos are fun, whimsical, and sophisticated!

We are not a stoic couple and did not want posed (or trying-too-hard) photos! Jessica was able to capture our personalities and the elegance of the day! I can't stop looking at our photos!

"Jessica is amazing!"

The best decision I could have made for my wedding was hiring Jessica Fike as a photographer! I was in a wedding prior that she was a photographer for and seeing how organized and easy and strategic she was to work with is what convinced me! She makes you feel so comfortable and helps teach you how to pose and smile and look so natural! She keeps you on schedule throughout your day and captures so much emotion in her photos. She is worth every penny plus more!

" the best decision."
